CHAPTER 1

Tequila, Jalisco and Surroundings

Tequila is more than just a drink, it is a "Pueblo Mágico" (Magical Town). It's Agave landscape has been declared World Heritage Site by the Unesco. Tequila is art, culture and tradition.

Brief History of Tequila

Tequila is a municipality of the Valles Region of the State of Jalisco, Mexico. It was initially called Tequillan or Tecuila by the indigenous people who inhabited it.This names been interpreted as: place where cuts are made or place of tributes.

Its first inhabitants were: chichimecas, otomies, toltecas and nahualtecas (indigenous groups). This population first settled in a place called Teochichán or Techinchán, which means: Place of the Almighty God or Where the straps and traps abound. (2)

Tecuila was a population commanded by Coyotl, the dominant king of the Teochinchán Valley, a rich and vast region in crops and weapons. This region was located between the current populations of Amatitán and Tequila. After the conquest, the foundations of the current town of Tequila were settled. Rudimentary installations of mezcal wine producers sprang up here and there, as if magically attracted to the site. (1)

Historically, a land of Tequila

The tequila industry is the main economic source of the municipality. It started in the 1600's. According to historical data, the agave plant was already exploited by the natives who made representations of it as the goddess of mezcal, called Mayahuel.

Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, they found lands planted with this crop. Historians suggest that they took this plant to Spain and when they saw that it was of their liking, they decided to establish taverns in this region, Tequila. (3)

Given the demand that this product had in a national and international level, the number of taverns started growing and increasing. (3)

Very old factories are still working, such as La Riojaña, founded in 1795; El Tigre (today La Constancia) founded in 1823; Destiladora de Occidente (today Tequila D'Reyes) founded in 1840; La Perseverancia (today Tequila Sauza) founded in 1873; El Llano (today Tequila Azteca) founded in 1876; La Mexicana (today Tequila Orendain) founded in 1879.
