Things to do

Visiting Tequila might bring great surprises to you, since in addition to offering several interesting places to visit, there's also a committee called Voces de Tequila (Voices of Tequila) that works on organizing cultural activities to make the destination more attractive and offer live experiences at little or no cost, such as:

  • Pairings
  • Public mixology classes
  • Public gastronomy classes
  • Exhibits of different kinds
  • Events for children
  • Special theme menus in the town's restaurants which depend of the current event that's being celebrated* (with cost to the consumer)

And much more!

These Special Events/Celebrations are:

  • The Mango and Plum Festival, in the month of June
  • The Fungi Festival, in the month of August
  • Day of the Death, in November
  • Fogones and Metates, in the month of December

Lodging

It's worth staying in Tequila for more than one day! The town offers several accommodation options for all tastes and budgets. There's even a hotel of giant barrels that's been very attractive to visitors. You will also find boutique hotels and traditional hotels downtown. By extending your stay, you can enjoy your visit more!

Sites to Visit in Tequila

These are some of the places I recommend you visit when coming to Tequila:

church at tequila jalisco

Santiago Apóstol Church

You find it at the town's Main Square or Plaza Principal. It's also known as La Purísima Church, as of the Immaculate Conception of Virgin Mary. It's a 17th century building that was remodeled in 1940. Its patron saint festivities are celebrated from the last weekend of November, until December 12th. You'll here find relics of Saint Toribio, a holy martyr born in Jalostotitlán, Jalisco, who died in 1928, when he was shot in Tequila. This saint is considered the patron of undocumented migrants.

Main Square and Portals

In this emblematic place, you'll find the traditional kiosk at the center of the square and, amidst its gardens, you'll find a series of bronze sculptures with popular tequila themes. It's the ideal place to take souvenir photos and to take a walk on some of its streets, where you'll find a great variety of tequilas and souvenirs for sale.

Old Clothes-Washing Site

A beautiful place where the women of the town during colonial times, gathered to wash their clothes and catch up on the news of the town (aka gossip). It was also the place where men would go around looking for beautiful women to court and later turn them into the future mothers of their children.

Los Azules Cascade

A beautiful natural site from where the water of the Tequila Volcano emanates. It's not a place of easy access; you must go down a ravine accompanied by someone who knows the area well. For this reason, it's recommended that you carry only what you need, to travel light. Upon arrival, you will see that this descent was definitely worth your while, since you'll be able to refresh yourself in its crystal clear waters and spend a very pleasant moment.

MUNAT Museum (National Museum of Tequila)

A block away form the Main Square. You will here find:

  • Lots of historical information on the Town of Tequila
  • Everything that's most relevant of our national drink, tequila, and the region
  • A large collection of bottles from all the tequila houses
  • A description of the production processes of different tequila houses

This is without a doubt, a place that you ust visit!

Sauza's Los Abuelos (Grandparents) Museum

You'll be able to learn all about a family of ancestry in Tequila; their history, tradition and how they became one of the main tequila brands. It's a place where you can breathe the legacy of three generations in the air.

La Capilla (The Chapel) Bar

la capilla bar

Located in Hidalgo 34, in the center of Tequila, Jalisco, we find La Capilla Bar, one of the 50 Best Bars in the World according to Drinks International Magazine. This place is 37th on this list and is over 70 years old. It's the cradle of the famous Batangas, a white tequila cocktail with lemon juice and cola. The place was given this name because they say that people enter standing but leave on their knees.

Tours to Distilleries and Agave Fields

This is without a doubt, the visit that most tourists go to in Tequila. It's very interesting to learn all about the process of making Tequila, from beginning to end. You must go:

  • To the agave fields to learn everything about the tequila's raw material, the Tequilana Weber Agave, Blue Variety, the only agave certified for the production of this drink. Learn where it comes from, how it reproduces, how to plant it and how the Jima (harvest of the agave's heart) is done.
  • To a distillery to learn about the process of making tequila. I recommend you visit a distillery that shows you the ancient or semi-artisanal process and also take the Tours of Casa Sauza, a tequila house that carries out a modern process with all the cutting-edge technology, so that you can learn about the two different processes there are.
