We know that the topic of alcohol intake encourages debates, since we all have strong opinions on the personal responsibility that we all have when it comes to the intake of our own drink. At Beam Suntory (Casa Sauza), we have our own exclusive philosophy of Drink smart®.

This initiative started based on the vision of our company: GROWING FOR GOOD. Our vision which tells us that it's not only important to grow as a business; we must also take care of the ways in which we do it. How do we apply it? By giving something back to our society and to the environment with beneficial actions, as to make up for everything they they both give to us.

As part of this initiative, Casa Sauza was given the task of developing a workshop on responsible intake aimed not only at its employees, but also at the families of its employees, its suppliers and the Sauza community in general. They were all invited to its historic facilities to be a part of this event.

Responsible Intake of Alcohol Workshop

This workshop had the following goals:

• Create awareness of responsible intake in our employees, their families, friends and the Sauza community in general, with the intention of safeguarding the health, safety and integrity of our people.
• Send the message that our tequila is a great product that, when used properly, can provide great emotional, social and even physical benefits to its consumers, by helping us fight today's well-known stress lifestyle that we have.

The Tequila spirit is a very special product but it requires, above all, proper handling by adults, that is, it should be handled with a lot of RESPONSIBILITY. The workshop also highlighted a key message that was: “zero alcohol for the under-age”.

Parties and holidays increase during certain times of the year and with this increase, the risk of consuming alcohol in an excessive and unsafe way, for ourselves and for those around us, increases as well. This is something that seriously worries Beam Suntory (Casa Sauza) and for this reason, this company's corporate branch has created programs for the prevention and responsible intake of alcohol. Beam Suntory's Drink Smart® program is a clear example of this and, at Casa Sauza, we join this campaign.

The workshop was given by Laura Stephanía Torres D´Giesecke, Bachelor of Communication Science from ITESO. Laura also has a master's degree in Administrative Sciences issued by ITESM and a Ph.D. in Administrative Sciences issued by ITESM as well.

Development of the Workshop

During the workshop, attendees started with a sort of group-therapy session, where several of the participants shared their experiences with alcohol, both from a negative and positive perspective. Likewise, children and young people were asked about their opinion regarding drinking and the message of “zero alcohol to the under-age” was highlighted, admitted under no circumstances.

Afterwards, participants were invited to show their ideas with a mural painting. They had to paint their ideas and perspectives on responsible ways of consuming alcohol as a team, as well as on what would happen if they fell into a harmful intake.

At the end of the event, we had an exhibit of the murals and they were placed in different sites of the manufacturing plant in order to share the message that alcohol is a drink that has to be taken seriously and handled with responsibility.
