In an previous article, one of our readers asked in the comments section about "pre-emergent selective chemical herbicides for weed control for the cultivation of the agave, or the one that affects the crop the least, as well as of a fungicide to prevent or control fusarium". It seemed to us such a pertinent question, that we decided to give it an answer as a blog post, so that it remains at hand for any other reader who may have the same question.

What do I need in order to deliver agave into a tequila factory?

A tequila factory only receives Tequila Weber Agave, blue variety. It must exclusively be that kind of agave! Besides, it must have also been planted in the territory that protects the Tequila Denomination of Origin (DOT).

Automation of the Agave Plantation

The plantation of the agave is the activity that gives a start to the different cycles of challenges and satisfactions of the production of tequila.

Traditionally, the agave is planted manually, wether it's conventional or micropropagated agave. Yet, although it is a noble labor, it is truly draining to do it this way, since the worker has to bend over the field during the whole day in order to work on it for the plantation of the agave. This position is clearly not so ergonomic and it is definitely very exhausting.

In my previous blog, I wrote about some of the agave production processes that we carry out in order to grow and harvest the best agave possible. These processes helped us get the international quality certification known as ISO 9001 and are the following:

  1. Land Selection
  2. Preparation of the land
  3. Planting of the agave

In this blog post, I will summarize the processes that follow these first three, so that we can better understand them and acknowledge thus, the importance that it has to do it all right, from the very beginning. This is what helps us have excellent crops.

In order to produce the best tequila, it is key to count with agaves of the highest quality. This is why Casa Sauza makes sure that its raw material (agave) always arrives in optimal conditions and free of diseases. The micropropagation of the Agave Tequilana Weber blue variety, plays an important role in achieving high quality agave. Developing these techniques requires the work and research of specialists, which is why we asked our strategic supplier NSIP (Nature Source Improved Plants of Mexico) to share some information about this interesting process with us.
